About The Catch

Originally started in November 2022 on Substack, The Catch is a newsletter that covers the Canadian news media from an abashedly anti-capitalist framework. It's run by me, Scott Martin. I'm an independent journalist and TMU J-school student. I've written for Ricochet, The Maple, rabble, The Green Line, Canadian Dimension and, yes, even The Beaverton.

Every week, The Catch publishes analysis on phenomena in the Canadian news industry, as well as a weekly round-up of important news stories that you may have missed. Whether you're overwhelmed by the sheer volume of news stories, sick of legacy framing, or frustrated from Meta banning news in Canada, The Catch has you covered.

Payment Options

After Substack felt it was appropriate to welcome and profit from Nazis, a free option was lost to host my newsletter. The new hosting service, Ghost, requires a minimum payment plan. As such, payment is available for those who would like to contribute. The main round-ups and analysis will always remain free.

More tiers will come in the future with further perks, but if you'd like to help improve The Catch, you can sign up for payment.
